Witness History! USS VANDENBURG Six Seats Available
|
Good news for wreck diving fans
- a new wreck will soon be sunk off the coasts of Key West, Florida. The
wreck of a US Air Force missile tracking ship, the General Hoyt S.
Vandenberg will be scuttled on May 15 in the Florida Keys National
Marine Sanctuary. The Vandenberg was used to tracked space missions before being decommissioned in 1983. It’s an impressive ship with three 30-40 foot radar dishes, two dome-like tracking structures, a huge bridge house, rocket launchers, and a weather station. The Ship that now carries the name, Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg, has a long and unique history spanning two generations in service to her country. The ex-USAFS Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg was first commissioned as the troop transport USNS Gen. Harry Taylor. The ship saw service in WWII, the Hungarian Revolution, and the Cold War. After decommissioning, it even starred in a popular motion picture.
The ship's distinguished history will continue in its final disposition as a recreational, educational and scientific resource. Canadian Artificial Reef Consulting is a proud member of the Reefmakers Team, working to turn this distinguished ship into Florida's greatest artificial reef.
